The right of residence regulates the conditions under which foreign nationals may live and work in Germany. It includes various types of residence permits and visas.
There are several types, including
- Residence permit: A distinction is made here according to the purpose of residence. Different regulations apply for students, employees and family members.
- Settlement permit: This is a permanent residence permit that can usually be applied for after several years of residence.
- EU Blue Card: For highly qualified workers from non-EU countries
- Visa: Temporary stays, e.g. for tourism or short-term studies and for long-term stays (see also: Visa).
The application is usually submitted to the responsible foreigners authority or to the responsible German embassy abroad. Various documents must be enclosed with the application.
The requirements vary depending on the type of residence permit, but often include
- Proof of financial independence
- Health insurance
- Pursuit of a specific purpose of residence (e.g. study, work)
- Compliance with the duration and conditions of stay
